Dear Friends of the Eno,
There is a part of me, likely the part that is a parent of two children, that feels like I should love all the seasons equally. My confession is that winter is my least favorite season and spring is my favorite. I struggle in those short, cold days of winter. My California-born inner child craves the sun, and, while I understand its necessity, winter in my world is a season barely tolerated as I pine for those first seventy-degree days of early spring. So allow me to be the bearer of good news: Spring is officially real and it is SPECTACULAR!

Our ERA staff text chain is full of spring wildflowers, baby woodcock chicks (ridiculously cute), and other signs of the season. I have been itching to catch my first white bass as they run from Falls Lake up the Eno and Flat Rivers to spawn in mid-March. This past weekend, that dream became a reality as I caught (and released) a 17” white bass from the Red Mill Road fishing access. My son refused to join me and has since expressed regrets about that decision. I acknowledged his pain and stifled a grin. More incentive to join me next weekend.
I hope that you too are emboldened by the season and are planning a trip to the Eno soon. The Eno Event Calendar is brimming with wildflower hikes, educational programming, and volunteer opportunities. I plan to join our team at the “Star Party” at the Few’s Ford access at Eno River State Park on April 4th from 7 to 8:30pm and for Earth Day at Durham Central Park on April 27th from noon to 5pm. Come out and say hello! You should also be on the lookout for our 2024 Annual Report in your mailbox or email soon. ERA is proud to share our accomplishments over the last year, none of which would be possible without the generous support of folks just like you. Thank you for supporting the Eno River Association. I hope to see you out by the river soon.
Sincerely,
Ryan J. Fehrman
Executive Director
Eno River Association
Thank you to Eli Haines-Eitzen for the photo of woodcock chicks.
